King Sancho "the Wise" of Navarre founded the town in 1164. Its medieval layout remains to this day —three long, narrow main streets surrounded by a wall. Within the walls the gothic churches of San Juan Bautista and Santa María de los Reyes are noteworthy, the latter with a highly appreciated Gothic Portal made by an unknown 14th Century architect and later decorated in polychrome stone by Juan Francisco de Rivera in the 17th Century.

Labastida
Time by car: 20 minutes from Eguren Ugarte · Distance: 20 km.
This town was a stronghold in the medieval Kingdom of Navarre. There are still many interesting noble houses and palaces. There is a popular market on Tuesday mornings during the summer.

Elciego
Time by car: 10 minutes from Eguren Ugarte · Distance: 6 km
Elciego gained architectural and urban, as well as social and religious importance in the 17th and 18th Centuries. Among its most important monuments are the Parish Church of San Andrés, declared a Significant Cultural Monument, and the Hermitage of the Virgen de la Plaza.
